Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Charlottesville public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Comprehensive Plan Five-Year Review
Council was scheduled to kick off the required five-year review of the city's Comprehensive Plan, the guiding document for growth, land use and development.
209 12th Street NE Rezoning
TNM Printing, a local business since 1982, wants to replace a house it owns with a new building for its growing operation — the first rezoning under the city's new development code. Commissioners liked the idea but pushed the applicant to consider CX-5 zoning, and neighbors haven't been surveyed yet.
LUEPC transparency
The regional land-use planning committee meets privately with no minutes, and Councilor Payne and Councilor Snook say elected officials and the public have no window into what it discusses. Staff acknowledged the critique and said formats could be reexamined.
801 West Street Individually Protected Property Designation
A 1905 home in the historically Black 10th & Page neighborhood, owned by one family since 1944, is on its way to becoming an Individually Protected Property at the owner's request. The designation adds Board of Architectural Review review for future changes but doesn't change zoning.
Rose Hill Drive mechanical equipment expansion
The city's Public Works department needs a slightly bigger equipment pad in the front yard of the Blue Ridge Health District building to swap out an old chiller. The commission signed off, requiring a nicer Trex fence for screening.
Homestay/Short-Term Rental Ordinance Review
Charlottesville's rules for Airbnb-style rentals in residential neighborhoods are a decade old, and homestay numbers have grown a lot. Staff studied whether to tighten or loosen the rules and concluded the city should keep them as-is, leaning on new enforcement software instead — partly because amending the ordinance would trigger a state requirement to let tenants run rentals with landlord permission.
